Director of Nursing, Inpatient Psychiatry

Northern NYC

Position Overview

If you’re the kind of psych nurse who thinks “I love the chaos, but now I want to be the one steering the ship,” then you might want to sit down for this one.

We’re helping a respected not-for-profit hospital in the northern NYC area recruit a Director of Nursing to oversee its robust, no-joke Inpatient Psychiatry program. This is not one of those endless committee meetings disguised as leadership roles. This is the real thing — clinical oversight, operational management, staff mentorship, and owning the outcomes.

And no — this is not an H+H hospital. So if you’ve been burned out by the bureaucracy, this is your sign.

The Units You’ll Command

Let’s talk turf. As Director, you’ll have Patient Care Managers reporting to you across a set of highly specialized and busy units:

CPEP (Psych ED)

  • 24/7 psych triage, evaluation, and short-term treatment
  • 60 total beds: 40 adult + 20 pediatric
  • Staff: 27 RNs + 24 PCTs
  • Patient ages: 5 to 105

Adult Inpatient Psych (3 units)

  • Bed capacity: 26–27 per unit
  • Admits come from CPEP or ER, post-med clearance
  • Staff: 16–18 RN/PCT teams per unit

Child & Adolescent Inpatient

  • Focused on crisis stabilization, treatment & family collaboration
  • Staff: 18 RNs + 20 PCTs

Life Recovery Center (Addiction Services)
Detox (LRC-3):

  • 20-bed unit focused on medical detox
  • 11 RNs, 2 LPNs, 9 PCTs

Rehab (LRC-4):

  • 25-bed post-detox program
  • 5 RNs, 5 LPNs

What You’ll Actually Do

  • Supervise the Patient Care Managers across all units
  • Collaborate with one Nurse Educator + one Clinical Instructor
  • Champion quality, safety, and staff development
  • Be a clinical sounding board, operations czar, and morale booster — all in one shift
  • Align care models with trauma-informed, recovery-oriented practices

The Ideal You

You know your psych acronyms like your Starbucks order. You’ve been in the trenches. You’ve de-escalated with your voice, your vibe, and a blanket. Now you’re ready to lead the next generation of psych nurses while ensuring safe, therapeutic care across multiple units.

Must-haves:

  • Active NYS RN license
  • Master’s degree in Nursing
  • At least 5 years of Nursing Leadership in Inpatient Psychiatry
  • A deep bench of psych nursing experience — ideally direct patient care before leadership
  • BLS & ACLS from AHA
  • Clinical insight + emotional intelligence + organizational steel

Why It’s Worth It

  • Mission-driven hospital that still believes in nurse voice
  • No micromanaging from 25 layers of admin
  • Lead a fully staffed, supportive nursing team
  • Competitive comp and full benefits
