Associate Chief, Dental Program | Academic + FQHC Leadership

new york city

Let’s Be Honest…

You didn’t spend years mastering dentistry just to stay in your lane forever.

At some point, you start seeing the bigger picture — the systems, the inefficiencies, the missed opportunities to elevate care across an entire program. And you think, “I could fix that.”

And not just with another filling.

This is that opportunity.

Why This Role Is Different

This isn’t a “Director in name only” kind of job.

This is a true second-in-command leadership role for one of the largest ambulatory dental programs in the country, sitting at the intersection of a top-tier academic medical system and a nationally recognized FQHC network.

That combination? It’s rare.

You get the clinical complexity, research, and teaching environment of academic medicine — paired with the mission, access, and real-world impact of an FQHC system that’s genuinely best-in-class.

Translation:
You’re not just improving operations… you’re shaping how dental care is delivered to entire communities.

The Role (What You’ll Actually Be Doing)

At a high level, you’ll be the person making sure everything clinical is tight, consistent, and continuously improving across multiple sites.

That means setting the tone for clinical standards, leading peer review and quality initiatives, and ensuring care delivery isn’t just compliant — it’s exceptional (because “good enough” isn’t exactly the standard you trained for).

You’ll work closely with operational and finance leadership (yes, actual partnership — not just meetings about meetings) to improve efficiency, expand services, and make smart decisions about resource allocation.

You’ll also play a major role in developing talent — mentoring dentists, guiding residents, and helping build a culture where people know what “great” looks like and are supported to get there.

And because this is an FQHC environment, you’ll be deeply connected to population health, access, and navigating the realities of Medicaid-heavy, value-based care — without losing sight of clinical excellence (or your sense of humor).

What Makes This Program Stand Out

This isn’t a small operation trying to figure things out.

This is a scaled, sophisticated dental service line with:

  • One of the largest ambulatory dental footprints in the U.S.
  • A fully integrated academic affiliation, including residency training
  • A mission-driven FQHC network consistently ranked among the best in the country
  • Real investment in quality metrics, innovation, and growth

In other words — the infrastructure is already here.

Your job is to elevate it even further… not rebuild it from scratch or “just make do” with duct tape and goodwill.

What You Bring to the Table

You’re not just a strong clinician — you’re someone who understands how to lead systems, not just cases.

You likely have experience overseeing providers across multiple sites, working within academic or complex care environments, and collaborating across disciplines without creating chaos.

You’re comfortable with data, understand the financial side of healthcare (or at least don’t run from it), and know how to hold people accountable without burning bridges.

Qualifications

  • DDS or DMD required
  • Active New York dental license (or ability to obtain)
  • 5+ years of clinical experience
  • Significant leadership experience in multi-site, academic, or large group settings
  • Strong background in clinical quality, program development, and provider management
  • Experience with FQHC, Medicaid populations, or value-based care models strongly preferred

The Bottom Line

If you’ve been waiting for a role where you can finally work on the system instead of just in it — where your impact goes beyond the operatory and into how care is delivered across an entire network — this is one of those rare opportunities that actually delivers.

You’ll have the chance to shape programs, mentor teams, and drive real change… without feeling like you’re constantly pulling teeth just to get things done. And yes, there’s still plenty of dentistry in the mix — just with fewer surprises than a “quick consult” that turns into a full extraction, and a lot more influence over how the whole practice runs.

If that sounds like your kind of next move, let’s talk.
