Director of Nursing, Perioperative Services
New York City area · Onsite · Full-time, permanent · Monday–FridayIf you can glance at the OR board at 6:45 a.m. and already know which room is going to run long, this could be for you.
Our client, a well-established safety net hospital system in the New York City area, is looking for a Director of Nursing to lead Perioperative Services. That means the OR, Ambulatory Surgery, PACU and Cath Lab, reporting to the AVP of Nursing.
You won’t be building from zero.
The outgoing Director spent five years building up the department. An experienced Nurse Manager and a PACU Nurse Educator are already in place. Relationships with the surgeons and Anesthesia are strong, which in perioperative terms makes this practically a unicorn.
What you’d be running as Director of Perioperative Services
You’d oversee eight OR suites, with more in the planning stage. Alongside them are an eight-bay ASU that also handles Phase II recovery for local and sedation cases, an eleven-bed PACU, and the Cath Lab.
The case mix is broad: general, robotic, ortho, neuro, vascular, thoracic, GYN, ENT, urology, ophthalmology, plastics, podiatry, dental, endoscopy and peds. There’s no trauma, no open heart and no transplant. You get the variety without the helicopter soundtrack.
Surgical leadership is actively growing the service, and this role is nursing’s seat at that table, working directly with Surgery and Anesthesia on how the department expands.
A near-term priority is building the OR nursing bench. If you have a few circulators and scrub nurses who would follow you across a bridge, or friends who run OR training programs, consider that a golden feather in your cap.
What you’ll need
- Active NYS RN license
- BSN
- CNOR
- 3–5 years of current perioperative leadership. Alternatively, 5+ years as a Nurse Manager or Assistant Director may be considered for an otherwise strong candidate.
Nice to haves
- MSN or other nursing-related master’s
- An existing network of OR nurses or ties to OR nursing training programs
The logistics
The role is Monday through Friday, with some schedule flexibility. That doesn’t stretch to four-day weeks; let’s not get carried away. There’s administrative on-call for urgent issues, which you already knew.
Compensation is competitive for the NYC safety-net market and will be discussed during the first conversation. Promise.
Why it’s worth a look
There’s room to grow, with new ORs on the horizon and a surgical leadership team actively building the service.
You’d step into a real support structure, with an established Nurse Manager and Educator and a surgical team that already works well with nursing. And you’d lead a culturally diverse department in a system that serves its community.
