Director of Nursing – Stroke & Ventilator Units

bronx NY

If you can run a stroke floor and a vent unit without losing your sense of humor, or your patience, this is worth a quick read.

This Director of Nursing role, which reports to the CNO, oversees two distinct, high-acuity units at the same facility. One is a stroke and med-surg floor with telemetry monitoring, managing stable chest pain, syncope, and post-ICU stroke patients under 24-hour observation.

The other is a long-term ventilator unit caring for patients with traumatic brain injury, encephalitis, and extended vent-weaning needs.

It’s a challenging assignment, (what isn’t these days in Nursing…?), both in staffing and acuity, and it needs a leader who genuinely wants to be there. Someone who finds purpose in longer-term med-surg care rather than quick turnover.

Multiple isolation cases run concurrently across these units, so steady infection control coordination and staff support are part of the daily rhythm, not the exception.

Beyond clinical oversight, this role is fundamentally about mentorship: building up a staff that needs consistent coaching and backup on a demanding unit, while representing nursing leadership in the hospital’s shared governance structure.

Some good news: you’ll be stepping into a hospital with some real, positive momentum. They have a $5M grant dedicated to their Pathway to Excellence initiative, which is already two years underway.

So they are looking for a leader fluent in shared governance and decision-making to help carry it forward. That’s you, right?

This long-standing, not-for-profit healthcare network has been a cornerstone of medical excellence in the area for generations, serving one of New York City’s most vibrant and diverse communities with compassion, commitment, and pride.

Compensation is competitive and will be discussed during the process.

What you’ll bring to the party:

  • RN with active state license (BSN required; MSN or CNL preferred or in progress)
  • 3–5 years of nursing leadership experience in acute care, med-surg, or critical care
  • Demonstrated experience managing units with multiple concurrent isolation cases
  • Strong staff mentorship and coaching track record on high-acuity or high-demand units
  • Experience with Magnet or Pathway to Excellence, particularly shared governance, preferred
  • Working knowledge of Epic or similar EHR preferred
