The Role
This is a senior leadership position designed for someone who has already commanded people, managed risk, and made decisions when it counted.
As Director of Security, you’ll have full responsibility for the safety, security, and investigative operations across a major hospital environment. The role reports into senior operations leadership and carries real authority, discretion, and autonomy. You’ll be expected to set the tone, establish standards, and ensure the operation runs consistently across all tours—without being micromanaged.
For former NYPD command staff, this is familiar ground: a complex operation, a diverse workforce, union considerations, constant public interaction, and the expectation that leadership shows up calm, prepared, and decisive.
What You’ll Be Accountable For
At its core, this role is about running the house.
You’ll direct all hospital-wide security operations, ensuring a safe environment for patients, visitors, physicians, staff, and property. The department consists of approximately 75 FTEs and includes an Assistant Director, Lieutenants, Sergeants/Investigators, and Security Officers. The workforce is unionized (1199), and the Director is expected to manage within the collective bargaining framework while maintaining performance, discipline, and professionalism.
Operational responsibility spans all shifts. You’ll set expectations, hold supervisors accountable, and ensure consistent standards regardless of the tour. During incidents—whether routine or critical—you’ll be the point person relied upon for judgment, coordination, and follow-through.
Workplace Violence, Emergencies & Risk
A major focus of the role is ownership of the organization’s Workplace Violence Prevention Program. This includes policy development, training, incident response, and continuous improvement.
You’ll also be responsible for preparedness and response planning across a range of scenarios—from individual incidents to large-scale emergencies. That includes coordinating internally with clinical and administrative leadership and externally with appropriate agencies when needed.
This is not a theoretical role. The expectation is that you know how to plan, how to respond, and how to debrief and improve after the fact.
Investigations & Professional Standards
The Director oversees all security investigations, including workplace violence, theft, misconduct, and safety concerns. You’ll review and author confidential investigative reports, ensure findings are addressed, and close the loop with staff and leadership.
Strong law enforcement–based investigative judgment is essential. This role requires discretion, accuracy, and the ability to handle sensitive matters without noise or delay.
Leading People
You’ll be responsible for recruiting, selecting, onboarding, and developing security staff as needed. Direct reports will look to you for guidance, support, and clear expectations.
The goal is a department that operates professionally, consistently, and with accountability—without unnecessary friction. Coaching, performance management, and discipline are all part of the job, and done with fairness and clarity.
Identification, Access & Controls
The Director oversees the hospital’s fingerprinting operation, identification badge issuance, and access control systems. These functions are critical to both safety and regulatory compliance and require close attention to detail and process integrity.
Executive & Strategic Presence
Beyond daily operations, the Director plays an active role in organizational planning related to safety and security. You’ll prepare reports, metrics, and analyses for senior leadership and serve as a trusted advisor on security-related matters.
This role requires independent judgment, creativity, and confidence in decision-making. Leadership expects you to identify issues early, propose solutions, and execute without being hand-held.
