Nurse Manager, Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program (CPEP)

new york city

If you’ve ever caught yourself doing a ligature-risk sweep of a friend’s bathroom, this is worth a minute.

Our client, a large community teaching health system in New York City, is looking for a fearless Nurse Manager to lead nursing in its Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program. It’s a high-volume, 24/7 CPEP serving both pediatric and adult patients.

Two populations, one program, one nurse manager. “Oh, what fun,” you might be thinking.

You’d lead more than 50 RNs and PCTs across day and night shifts. You know they’re the people who keep the unit steady when evaluations stack up and the 9.39s keep coming.

What you’d be running

You’d hold 24-hour accountability for nursing care across pediatric and adult services. That covers staffing grids, schedules, hiring, onboarding, coaching and evaluations for a team big enough that the schedule is practically its own clinical specialty.

On the floor, you set the safety standard for every shift. That means de-escalation first, restraint and seclusion as the last resort, observation levels that match the patient in front of you, and an environment that passes a contraband and ligature check on any random Tuesday.

You’d partner closely with CPEP psychiatry, social work and the emergency department on throughput and disposition. You’d also keep the unit survey-ready for OMH, DOH and Joint Commission, and own quality, incident review and the unit’s operating budget.

Why it’s worth a look

The scope spans pediatric and adult psychiatric emergency care under one leader, which means two skill sets built in a single role.

The team is substantial. More than 50 nursing staff is large enough to build a culture, not just cover shifts.

The mission is real. This program provides psychiatric emergency care for one of New York City’s highest-need communities, on every shift, including the full-moon ones. Studies say there’s no such thing. Studies have never worked a full-moon night shift.

What you’ll need

  • Active, unrestricted New York State RN license
  • BSN
  • 3–5 years of nursing management experience
  • Psychiatric hospital or emergency department experience
